Ryan Foster showed exactly why he won Mildenhall Town’s player of the month award for November, by scoring two goals as his side overcame hosts Norwich United 3-2 at Plantation Park.
All five goals came in what proved to be an action packed second half which wasn’t short of incident.
Visiting Mildenhall dominated large parts of the first half, but they couldn’t find a way past their former goalkeeper Ben Nower.
The Norwich stopper tipped a fierce effort from Luke Thurlbourne over the crossbar, while Luke Catchpole also volleyed over when well placed.
And Mildenhall would have paid for failing to turn their pressure into goals late in the half but for their keeper Josh Pope, who pulled off two top class saves to deny Paul Atkins and Andrew Claydon.
The home side came out for the second half with more purpose, and with 51 minutes gone they were in front. Claydon wrestled his way into the Mildenhall area, only to be tripped by full back James Paterson. Lee Hunter took the subsequent spot kick, emphatically sending his effort into the top left hand corner of the net.
However, the lead lasted just four minutes thanks to Dave Werthman. Jamie Thurlbourne whipped across an inviting free-kick which the Mildenhall skipper met unopposed and he guided his downward header beyond the reach of Nower.
Then, just three minutes later Mildenhall were in front. John Sands burst through the Norwich backline and rounded the advancing Nower. The striker’s touch took him wide of goal though, so he opted to cross. That effort only found James Wilson, but the centre back’s clearance dropped to the lurking Foster, who took one touch before slamming the ball past Nower.
Hunter went close to pulling his side level on the hour, but just as his chipped effort appeared to be nestling in the goal, Michael Harvey got back on the goal line to head the ball clear for a corner.
The 28-year-old was not to be denied his second of the afternoon though, but just as his first, it came from the penalty spot. Claydon again was the player to be felled, this time by keeper Pope. There was nothing tame about Hunter’s effort, on this occasion he thrashed the ball straight down the middle of the goal while Pope gambled left.
Both side’s were now trying to find the winning goal, and it was Foster who proved to be decisive 15 minutes from time. The midfielder’s first goal was good, but this effort topped it. He claimed possession 20 yards from goal and instantly sent an effort into the bottom corner of the net, leaving a helpless Nower rooted to the spot as Simon Charlton’s men returned to Suffolk with the three points. |
