Mildenhall Town ran riot on Bank Holiday Monday, dispersing of visiting Wisbech Town by six goals to one at Recreation Way.
Despite being comprehensively beaten by Needham Market last week, the Fenman had previously been on a run of nine games without defeat, but they were well and truly swept aside by Simon Charlton’s men.
The rout started with just one minute on the clock, with Aaron Turner continuing his rich vein of goalscoring form. The former Soham Town Rangers man met a deep Jamie Thurlbourne cross with a first time volley which left Alex Street in the Wisbech absolutely no chance.
The lead was doubled just three minutes later, a goal which effectively sealed the points even at this early stage. This time it was Jamie’s brother Luke Thurlbourne supplying the cross, which was headed superbly past Street by central defender Michael Harvey.
With 25 minutes gone Wisbech, who had posed little goal threat up until this point, almost pulled a goal back through Darren Jimson but the striker’s low drive was turned away by Mildenhall goalkeeper Josh Pope.
Play soon switched back to other end and on 36 minutes, Harvey’s centre back partner Dave Werthmann claimed a goal for himself. David Cooper sent across a teasing corner which the Mildenhall skipper met unopposed to power beyond the reach of Street.
And with half time approaching the home side were four goals to the good, with Turner collecting his second of the afternoon. The forward was alert to collect a weak backpass before using his pace to burst beyond Stuart King and guide an effort into bottom corner of the net from 18 yards.
Just as Mildenhall did in the first half, Wisbech found the net just a minute into the second period when substitute Stuart Cobb fired into the top corner of the net from eight yards.
However, Cobb’s goal failed to spark a Fenman comeback and proved to be just a mere blip on Mildenhall’s way to an emphatic victory.
On the hour Turner burst through the offside trap again, and despite his chipped effort appearing to be going in, John Sands made sure by forcing his effort over the line with King in close company.
Pope again denied Jimson without a save from point blank range as the pair continued their own personal duel, before Mildenhall midfielder Ryan Foster rounded off the scoring.
Sands this time turned provider, waiting for the perfect opportunity to feed Foster, who turned inside before unleashing a curling left footed effort into the corner of the net from 12 yards.
Mildenhall substitute Chris Barrett was unlucky on two occasions not to extend Mildenhall’s lead further, while Pope again frustrated Jimson, tipping his powerful effort over the bar as the game drew to a close. |
