DEFLECTED STRIKE DEFEATS HALL
By Liam Apicell.

A deflected strike from Gary Gilmore on the stroke of half time was enough for Wroxham to claim all three points at the expense of visiting Mildenhall Town.

Simon Charlton’s men will feel they deserved at least a point from the encounter however, and after their dominant second half display few could argue with that opinion.

Hosts Wroxham came out the traps quickly, and within the opening five minutes former Mildenhall winger Stephen Spriggs and Gavin Lemmon both spurned decent chances to break the deadlock.

With ten minutes played, home keeper Scott Howie was called into action to deny Ryan Foster from close range following a good cross from Aaron Turner.

Martin McNeil then headed a Shaun Howes corner onto the roof of the net, before Gilmore took goalscoring matters into his own hands.

Another corner from Howes caused problems in the Mildenhall defence, and when the ball found the winger on the edge of the box he unleashed a powerful drive which beat Josh Pope with the aid of two deflections.

Pope produced a fine save to deny another former Mildenhall player Gareth Simpson at the start of the second half, and from then on the away side were in control.

With 52 minutes gone half-time substitute John Sands showed great technique to send a powerful volley goalwards, only for Howie to match his effort with a save a full stretch.

New addition Ben Deacon then had two chances to haul Mildenhall level. First Turner lifted a great ball into his path, but like Sands the striker found Howie in stubborn mood. On the second occasion Turner and Jamie Thurlbourne linked well down the left for the latter to drill in a cross. Deacon met the cross three yards from goal but somehow managed to lift the ball over the crossbar with Howie stranded.

Sands, who had looked lively since replacing David Cooper, then had a close range effort blocked by Graham Challen.

And deep into stoppage time, Challen threw himself at a goalbound effort from Turner to ensure his side claimed all three points.
