Three second half goals eased Mildenhall Town in the second round of the Ridgeons League Cup at Downham Market's Memorial Field ground.
Hosts Downham, who ply their trade in Ridgeons Division One, more than matched their opponents in the first half and both Ben Coe and Liam Forshaw forced excellent saves from Mildenhall goalkeeper Josh Pope.
However, their failure to convert these chances was duly punished with two Mildenhall goals in the opening five minutes of the second half.
First Ryan Foster and Luke Catchpole linked for the latter to drill in a cross which Chris Barrett converted with ease from close range.
Then James Paterson found Jamie Thurlbourne who raided down the left before seeing his low cross turned into his own net by Downham midfielder Chris Dickson.
The visitors were now firmly in control and substitute John Sands could have extended the lead further, but he scuffed Thurlbourne’s pinpoint cross wide of Ben Griffin’s goal.
The lead was eventually increased seven minutes from time. Downham’s Marcus Fendley’s backpass was intercepted by the alert Aaron Turner and he kept his cool to round Griffin and squeeze his effort into an empty net for what proved to be the final goal of the tie. |
