Substitute Chris Barrett struck one minute from time as Mildenhall Town came from two goals behind to defeat Histon Reserves and advance through to the quarter finals of the Ridgeons League Cup.
The wind played a massive part in the tie, particularly during a first half which exploded into life after the half hour mark.
First only the post denied Mildenhall’s Aaron Turner handing his side the lead after he had smartly lobbed Histon goalkeeper Sean Greygoose.
However, two goals in as many minutes swung the advantage in favour of visiting Histon.
The opening goal was scored by Max Yorke, who calmly sent a side foot volley beyond the reach of keeper Josh Pope, then skipper Callum Stewart took everyone by surprise by firing in a free-kick from wide on the left into the bottom corner of the net.
The game changing goal came on the stroke of half-time and it was the in-form Turner who claimed it. Greygoose failed to hold David Cooper’s low cross and Turner was on hand to turn in the rebound and send Mildenhall into the break in positive mood.
Hosts Mildenhall started the second half brightly and were level just six minutes in. After Carl Murkin had been fouled, Cooper took the resultant free-kick which struck the underside of the bar before just squeezing over the line.
Histon’s James Stevenson was then denied a certain goal by Luke Thurlbourne, who got back on the goal line to keep the scores level.
With extra time fast approaching it was Mildenhall that grabbed the winner. Jamie Thurlbourne showed good skill on the left wing before sending in a cross which both Greygoose and his defence failed to deal with and Barrett tapped in from close range.
There was still time left for Ryan Foster to crash an effort against the bar as Mildenhall went about looking to rub further salt in the Histon wound. |
