Mildenhall Town eased into the semi-final of the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup with a 3-1 victory over Ridgeons Premier Division leaders CRC at Recreation Way.
Goals from John Sands, David Cooper and Chris Barrett have rewarded Mildenhall with a trip to Zamaretto Premier Division outfit Cambridge City to contest for a place in the final.
The home side’s leading goalscorer Sands got the ball rolling with the opening goal of the game after 28 minutes. David Cooper’s deep cross was headed down by Carl Murkin and Sands was on hand to take a touch before firing past Martin Davies from eight yards.
Cooper turned scorer just before the break, beautifully curling a free-kick over the visiting wall and past a rooted Davies in goal.
CRC’s fate was all but sealed on the hour when Murkin’s centre was headed goalwards by Sands. Davies did well to deflect his effort, but Sands’ strike partner Barrett was on hand to tap the ball in from close range.
The away side refused to exit the competition without a fight however, and after Jack Bailey fired inches wide, skipper Jack Eades scored direct from a corner.
As stoppage time drew to a close, Mildenhall's 16-year-old substitute Jack Gould almost marked his debut in perfect fashion with a left footed volley, but Davies managed to grasp his effort. |
